Two Poems by Ed Higgins

time dilation

we sail headlong
towards distant stars
blinking at us–

like sirens
their cosmic call
everywhere at once
apparently

but the light left
so long ago
we would be late
even if we could
eventually arrive there
in vestigial time

exhausted by the trip
& generations
later much too late
to explain to those
we met

how it is they
like us
must endure the ironies
of E=mc2

but the trick is
to trust the appearing
or the disappearing

or maybe just the slow dilation,
knowing better than to trust your eyes.

take me to your leader, bastards

look, i’ve had a long trip
and, yes, i do look like one
of your arachnids on mega-steroids

and, yes, you bipedals do make
me nervous with your paranoid
fear of spiders in your bathtubs
or running up your pant legs
making for your puny genitals

or black widows happily making
you widowed, wrapped as a silk-
sleeved snack. but not tonight, please

i have this space/time headache
having come from a faraway, dry planet
and, yes, i really want to suck a paralyzed
bit of liquefied flesh dry of its fluids

and then just fall back onto my web
in my eight-legged ship here behind me
with a light book or a dull Earth video

but i am resisting, truly, i am resisting. *
